About Half Moon
Half Moon is a vibrant theatre for young people in Tower Hamlets, nestled between London's two financial centres, the City and Canary Wharf. We have been working locally and nationally with young people of all ages and abilities since the 1980s, using drama as a tool for learning. We specialise in working with disabled young people and those who have little or no access to arts activity.
“The hottest place in London for young people.” Evening Standard
The purchase of our building provides ‘a once in a blue moon opportunity' for a major re-development project. We have consulted extensively with the young people, families, teachers and theatre professionals who use our building and have identified what needs to be done to improve their visits and to help Half Moon deliver even more high quality activity.
“Half Moon's creative impetus is rooted in the young people and diverse communities with which it engages. As one of our regularly funded companies, Half Moon plays a key role in our theatre strategy. The Arts Council is pleased to be a partner in this important capital project which will allow this company to build on their excellent work and further access quality theatre for young people across the UK."
Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England
External renovations
We are located in the Stepney Green Conservation Area and with its grand architecture and eccentric façade the Half Moon building is a local landmark. However many parts of the building are now in need of urgent repair, including extensive external repairs and redecoration. We are committed to ensuring that the renovation of the Victorian façade, which includes decorative stucco fruit and flowers, will be undertaken with due sensitivity to the historic value of the building.
"Half Moon is a small gem hidden behind an eccentric Victorian façade in the heart of London's East End. The Theatres Trust is pleased to support restoration of the outside of this magnificent building and reconfiguration of the interior, as it represents an important capital project for the theatre sector and provides a valuable resource for young people in one of London's Olympic and Paralympic Games boroughs."
Mhora Samuel, Director, The Theatres Trust
Foyer improvements
Although the building is fully accessible, the public facilities must be upgraded to meet the requirements of our users, audiences and performers. The rejuvenated building will provide a more welcoming and accessible venue. The entrance will be enlarged and there will be a new large passenger lift to the foyer. The foyer will be doubled in size and relocated to make the space more comfortable for audiences.
Performing Arts Laboratory
The basement will be remodelled to create new studio spaces for emerging artists to develop new work for and with young people, thus establishing a ‘performing arts laboratory' in the building. There will be a new ramp to create an accessible escape route from the basement to allow everyone, including disabled artists/companies and users, to access these new facilities.
A Green Half Moon
specialist who conducted a ‘green audit' of Half Moon to find out how we can be more environmentally friendly. The report recommended the installation of a Biomass Boiler to replace the old gas boilers and this has been incorporated into our plans.
The Result
Once all this work is completed, Half Moon will be better equipped to provide an increased level of high quality work for and with young people in Tower Hamlets, across London and further afield.
