Accessibility

Our website has been designed to provide you with an enjoyable interactive experience, as well as to be inclusive and accessible to all users, regardless of disability or technology limitations. This page highlights what we have done to make our website accessible, and explains how to use these features.

Due to the differences between web browsers and online standards it would be impossible to satisfy all the criteria recommended to achieve full accessibility standards compliance without making sacrifices to design, interactivity and fun. We at Half Moon are confident that this site will be a fun and accessible experience for everyone but if you do have any questions or recommendations please dont hesitate to contact us.

A number of features on our website make it easier for you to find what you want:

Navigation

Access keys have been set up to make it easy to jump directly to frequently used pages.

Every page has a Skip Navigation link at the top of the page to allow users of assistive technologies to jump straight to the main content of the page.

All the pages on our website are "device independent" and can be navigated by using a keyboard, mouse or combination of the two.

Links

Some links may have Title attributes which describe the destination of the link in greater detail. Title attributes are not included if the link already fully describes the where the link goes to; for example, "contact us".

Wherever possible links are written to make sense out of context, so that you do not have to read the surrounding text to understand where the link will take you.

On any page, identically-worded links will always link to the same page where possible.

You will always be warned if clicking on a link opens a file or website in a new browser window. The warning is either contained in the link itself, the Title attribute or in the text immediately after the link.

Fonts

We have chosen to use absolute font sizes on this site to keep navigation and copy to what we believe to be the optimum for both our visitors and the needs of our site. However should you wish you can easily override the font sizes we have set using the font size controls built into your web browser. As there are so many different browsers available (and many different versions of each) it is not possible to list the means to achieve this on this page but it is normally achieved via keyboard shortcuts that will be detailed both in the browser menus and the browser's help files.

Abbreviations and Acronyms

Throughout the site abbreviations and acronyms will be spelt out in brackets after each appearance - for example: RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People).

Some sites use technology available to not show the full version but as this oftens relies on the correct browser, or a mouse being held over the abbreviation or acronym (which is a problem for users who are unable to use a mouse) and often conflicts with screen reader software we have decided to avoid going down this route. These tooltips also cannot be resized and if relied upon impede the enjoyment of users with low vision.

Images

All graphics and images in our website have an alternative text (ALT) attribute that describes the contents or function of the image. This description will be displayed when images are turned off, on a text-only browser or as a ‘tool tip’ in certain browsers when the mouse pointer is moved over the image.

Visual Design

A number of elements have been included in the design of the website to make it easier for everyone to use:

  • While our website uses defined font sizes they can still be resized in your browser.
  • Where colours are used we have tried to make sure there is maximum contrast between foreground and background items.
  • Active hyperlinks appear in bold red in the main copy and bold blue in the navigation areas at the top and to the left.
  • If your browser or reading device does not support stylesheets, all content will still be readable.

Access Keys

Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the website. We have set up such access keys on our website to make it easier for users to navigate around the site.

The access keys for the pages on our website are as follows:

How To Use Access Keys

Users of different operating system and browser combinations will need to use different key combinations to use access keys. Also, some browser versions, such as Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape Navigator 4, do not support access keys, while others, such as Opera, do not support numerical access keys.

Windows: Internet Explorer
Press the Alt key followed by an access key and then press Enter or Return.

Windows: Mozilla and Netscape Navigator
Press the Alt key and an access key at the same time.

Mac (Apple Macintosh)
Press the Ctrl key followed by an access key.
