BLOG: Martha (Kickstart Placement) Final Blog

After just four months, my Kickstart placement is coming to an early end. But it’s good news! I’ll be joining the full-time Half Moon team as Theatre and Programmes Administrator from next week. Before I tell you a little more about the role, I’ll fill you in on my last couple of weeks as Marketing and Box Office Assistant.

As well as continuing my Box Office duties on Saturdays, I helped out with Half Moon’s sixth annual Fun Palace. Fun Palaces are a network of educational and crafty activities held for communities across the UK, inspired by the ideas of iconic theatre director Joan Littlewood. This year our theme was oceans, and the theatre was transformed into a watery wonderland where young people could listen to stories, make beautiful nautical crafts and participate in music and movement workshops. Spending the day on the arts and crafts tables drawing sea creatures and painting with the young people was a definite highlight and got me really looking forward to meeting all the Youth Theatres as part of my new role.

One of the biggest marketing tasks has been our brochure drop, delivering over 10,000 brochures to almost 100 different local schools and businesses to spread the word about our Autumn Season. I spent a couple of days bundling up brochures to be sent off, so keep an eye out for them around Tower Hamlets!

I’ve loved the marketing side of my job as it has allowed me to get creative with social media content, and our Communications Manager Stephen has been really encouraging. Even though I won’t be working as much with Stephen anymore on marketing, I’ll be seeing him more than ever now that I’m full time, and my desk is only a few feet away!

After getting to know the theatre, the staff, and the young people over the last few months, I have felt really welcomed at Half Moon and I am over the moon (if you’ll pardon the pun!) to be staying. The new role will involve working across multiple areas of the theatre, the perfect way to expand my knowledge and continue working behind the scenes to enable young people to discover and express themselves through drama.

I am hugely grateful to the Creative Access Kickstart team for supporting me through the placement, and to Sam, the last Theatre and Programmes Administrator, for getting a new job… Sorry Sam! I’ll miss him really and wish him all the best in his new home at Little Angel Theatre.

I’m so glad that I get to continue being one of the friendly faces our young people and visitors see when they enter Half Moon. If you’re in any of our Youth Theatres, or coming to see a performance, make sure to say hello!
