BLOG: Stella (KickStart Placement)

I am now finishing my fourth month of my six-month KickStart placement as Marketing and Box Office Assistant at Half Moon. My placement is supported by Creative Access, and I have attended two check-in zoom sessions with them where I could talk to other people my age in similar arts placements, set professional goals and get general career advice.

I’ve really enjoyed how varied the work has been throughout my placement and all the knowledge I’ve been able to soak up from everyone around me in the office so far. I have been able to dip in and out of a few different aspects of running an arts organization by learning a bit about fundraising with Jackie (Administrative Director) and doing some statistics and reporting work with Martha (Theatre and Programmes Administrator).

It was exciting to be involved in the starting of a new season of shows in January as there was a lot of marketing to be done before hand with Stephen (Communications Manager). One of the biggest tasks I undertook at the beginning of the year was helping to organize the new Spring Season brochures to be delivered to over 100 local schools and businesses. This involved several days of boxing up brochures and creating a map of drop off points and locations.

Another thing I really enjoyed was getting to place the order with Brick Lane Bookshop for books for us to sell at our pop-up bookshop. I went through the Spring Season brochure and researched books that would go with the theme and age group of each show. As part of my box office duties on a Saturday I also sell these books, so it was nice to have been the person who chose which books we ordered!

I would say that the biggest perk of all has been getting to watch some of the brilliant shows that go on here, Half Moon’s production of Party was a particular highlight and it felt surreal to be working in the office on the computer one moment then sat in the theatre watching a brilliant and engaging run through of the show the next!

I have loved working with such a friendly and nurturing team, and I am looking forward to the next few months of my placement.
