Drama helps children learn

This autumn, Half Moon invites babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents or carers to join a 10-week journey of FREE creative play, combining drama, movement, sensory discovery and storytelling.

Running every Thursday from 25 September to 4 December, these hour-long sessions take place at either the Isle of Dogs Family Hub (E14 3BX) or the John Smith Family Hub (E1 2EN).

Guided by experienced facilitators, each week explores a brand-new world: a forest alive with butterflies, a castle hidden among spider webs, or even a voyage into space.

But this isn’t simply playtime. It’s a carefully crafted programme rooted in evidence of real impact. Half Moon’s 2022–23 Creative Play Impact Report showed that across six programmes in Tower Hamlets, 192 participants from 92 families benefited from 70 sessions. Parents consistently reported that their children developed confidence, communication skills and joy in exploring stories through movement and play.

The sessions also provide a space for parents and carers to connect, share experiences and discover new ways of playing with their children. One local parent explained: “Since my son begun coming to the sessions, I have noticed a massive change in his confidence and his personality in a very positive way. This helps with meeting new people.”

Facilitators also see remarkable transformations over the 10 weeks. As one practitioner reflected: “We see children come out of their shells. At first, they might watch from their parents’ lap, but soon they’re leading the way. It’s a joy to see families grow in confidence together.”

Structured yet playful, sessions balance energetic activity with quieter sensory moments, using repetition and imaginative storytelling to build children’s confidence. Parents are encouraged to carry ideas home, from simple games with everyday objects to songs and movements that spark curiosity.

Beyond the creative benefits, families often talk about the friendships formed. Another parent told us: “This has made us both so much more confident to be able to meet other parents. The Half Moon team are amazing!”

With its proven impact, warm welcome and focus on fun, Creative Play is more than a weekly session – it’s a shared adventure that supports children’s early development and strengthens family bonds.

Places are free but limited, so booking is essential. Contact the Family Hib centres directly: Isle of Dogs – 020 7364 1179; John Smith Family Hub – 020 7364 0537.
