Six of our eight Youth Theatres brought the autumn 2019 term to a close with some wonderful sharings in front of family and friends.

Comets – The Pet Shop

This term, Comets have been devising their show based on the idea of pets in a pet shop. At the start of term, we acted out one of the stories from the book Olga da Polga by Michael Bond to give us some ideas.

We then created our own story about pets, taking turns to come up with a story sentence each. We thought about which animals are found in a pet shop, and how we can move like them, exploring our physicality and developing our movements so we weren’t just crawling on all fours!

We then looked at our story and discussed which characters would be in the show, and also if we wanted to change any parts of our story so it would make better sense when we performed it on stage. We then created our dialogue as we acted our story, each member thought about their character and came up with their lines for the script.

We want to thank parents, carers, family and friends for supporting this group of young talented performers, we are so proud of them!

Eclipse – One Planet, Our Planet

With climate change a hot issue in our world at the moment, we all need to act now to make a difference. This term, Eclipse Youth Theatre have been exploring the impact of climate change, in particular, the impact plastic has in our oceans.

The performance is based on a true story, which involved 28,000 plastic ducks falling into the ocean as a ship capsized in 1992. To this present day, the plastic ducks are still floating around the world.
The ducks are being washed up on beaches globally and have recently been spotted in Australia, China, Iceland and Scotland!

Through the process of learning about this true story and the impact plastic has in our oceans, the young people have devised a thought provoking performance.

Eclipse Youth Theatre have really impressed this term with their mature conversations and debates around the use of plastics and the effects this is having on our planet. We have used a variety of drama techniques to explore this theme including still tableaux, improvisation, movement and mime.

Eclipse Youth Theatre has one message,

“We have no planet B.”

Equinox – The Snowball

This term Equinox have been exploring the art of shadow puppetry. We started off by researching different shadow puppet techniques; looking at hand shadow puppetry, using whole-body shadows, making puppets and using projector screens.

Equinox then split into small groups and were given a poem that they had to design the puppets for and perform back to the whole group. We thought about how our designs translate in shadow, and how we must positions ourselves and the puppets whilst using different light sources and types of screens.

One of the small group’s poems; Snowball by Shel Silverstein captured the imagination of the rest of Equinox and we decided to use this as the stimulus for the show. Starting with the poem, the group thought about what would happen next to the snowball and they created a story as a whole group, taking turns to come up with a story sentence each.

We then divided the story into sections and each group worked on how to perform their section. We chose to set the play in a garden, and devised ingenious ways to create different screens within that setting. On top of this Equinox have been practicing voice projection and expression to really bring the story to life.

Equinox Autumn 2019 Gallery

Lunar – A Storm Inside My Mind

This term, the devising process began with a poem titled Alone by Maya Angelou as the stimulus. The young people explored their response to this poem through drama and a main theme of pressure was extracted.

The group then moved forward to look at the pressure young people may face in the 21st century, some of the possible issues could include social media, peer pressure and exam stress.

Conversations and exploration moved further forward to explore the word support; what does support look like and how can we support each other as young people grow up in the world today?

A variety of drama techniques were used to explore these themes; one of the main techniques was movement and learning to physicalise and embody emotions. The young people were tasked with expressing certain words and feelings through movement as a full ensemble.

Lunar Youth Theatre have worked incredibly hard this term. Mature conversations have led to powerful movements and acting to create a thought provoking performance.

In the words of Maya Angelou in the poem first used:
“Nobody, but nobody, can make it out here alone”
