Theatre to promote wellbeing

Half Moon Theatre Named Social Prescribing Champion

Half Moon Theatre in East London has long been a beacon for young people’s creativity, and now it’s taking its community support a step further. The theatre has recently been recognised as a Social Prescribing Champion, offering an exciting new pathway for children and young people to engage in the arts as a form of emotional, social and personal development.

Social prescribing is a growing initiative that connects individuals with non-clinical support in their community, such as arts activities, to improve wellbeing. With this new recognition, Half Moon is inviting educators, social workers, youth workers and social prescribers to refer young people who may benefit from joining one of the theatre’s inclusive drama programmes.

Whether a young person is experiencing anxiety, isolation, low self-esteem or simply needs a creative outlet, Half Moon’s supportive and welcoming environment offers a space to explore, express and build confidence. The theatre’s innovative programmes focus on inclusion, accessibility and creative development, giving young participants a voice and a chance to connect with others through drama.

“Participating in creative activities such as drama can be truly transformative for young people, helping them build resilience, develop empathy and find their place in the world,” said Lydia Hallam, Half Moon’s Creative Learning Administrator.

“Drama helps young people to express themselves, process emotions and discover their identity. We’ve seen time and again how stepping into someone else’s shoes can help a young person step more confidently into their own life.

“We’re proud to be a Social Prescribing Champion and to play a part in supporting young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing through the power of theatre.”

Many of the theatre’s programmes are free to access upon referral, making them a valuable resource for professionals working with young people across the borough and beyond. Workshops and groups are tailored by age and need, with a strong emphasis on personal growth, teamwork and fun.

With Half Moon Theatre at the helm, social prescribing in the arts is more than a policy – it’s a performance with real-life impact.
