VIDEO: Fly the Flag

half moon full RGB PINK 300x300

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Half Moon is flying the flag for human rights, 24–30 June 2019, alongside other arts organisations and human rights charities across the UK.

Why? How many of the 30 articles of the UDHR can you name? Most people struggle to name many. In fact, human rights campaigners report primarily negative associations with the term ‘human rights’ in the UK. We want to change this.

Half Moon’s Youth Theatre members made a flag of their handprints to celebrate that human rights are for everyone, every day. They also made a video about their most important human rights, which you can see below.

The UDHR was created by women and men who witnessed first-hand the horror and inhumanity of the Second World War and were determined that it should never be repeated. And today, through the UK Human Rights Act, this powerful idea protects the rights of everyone in this country.

Human rights are more than just a catchphrase. They inspire and empower. Inspire a vision of a world free from abuse and cruelty. Empower by protecting us from state abuse and curbing the reach of society’s most powerful, so that a minimum standard of safety and dignity is guaranteed to every human being.
