Bettie loves the forest – it’s her sanctuary, where she feels calm and in control. But when the council threatens to cut down her favourite tree, Bettie must find the courage to fight for what she loves.

The night before the woodcutters come, Bettie meets the bold and mysterious Paida Moyo. The chance encounter sparks an extraordinary journey of friendship, bravery and self-discovery. Can the two friends save the woodlands and its critter crew before it’s too late? And how might the forest help Bettie in return?

Written by Tatenda Naomi Matsvai, Brave Bettie is a magical woodland adventure told through poetry, songs and stories that explore their home heritage in Zimbabwe. This playful yet powerful production explores resilience, self-belief, activism and our bond with nature.

Co-produced by Half Moon and Z-arts, this exciting partnership brings together two of the UK’s leading theatre companies for young audiences.

All Cinema Chill tickets are £5

Please note: this is a cinema style experience, with the pre-recorded production shown on a big screen in the theatre space.

Reviews

⭐️⭐️⭐️Brave Bettie soars when extolling the wonders of the woodland where the escapade unfolds…. It’s theatre to widen your horizons, best followed up with a wander in your nearest green space…. Shades of My Neighbour Totoro…[and] a latter-day Lorax…. [Brave Bettie is] attuned to the smells, tastes and rhythms of nature…. [with] a keen sense of mythology that is as embedded in the tale as the ancient tree.”

The Guardian

⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Step aside, Anansi the Spider – there’s a fabulous new superhero on the block, bringing friendship, fun and exciting eco-adventure!… [Brave Bettie is] a playful, active adventure that embraces the natural world and is full of gentle laughter and brilliant characterisation…. A really refreshing take on the ancient African legend, bringing a new superhero into our modern world and showing how the knowledge of the ancestors can be useful as well as entertaining. As the lights came up, the children next to me were asking when they’d get to see the next episode! I will be there for sure!”
