Speech Bubbles

A targeted, year-long, evidence-based intervention for KS1 children who have a Speech, Language and Communication Need, supporting 20 children to develop their Speaking, Listening and Attention Skills and enhancing the skills of a member of school staff to run small group creative work.

The programme has impressive results. In 2020-21, despite the difficulties of delivering the programme during the pandemic, teacher assessments showed that:

  • 78% of participating children improved their learning, speaking and listening skills;
  • 80% improved their emotional behaviour and conduct behaviour;
  • 84% showed improvements back in class.

Speech Bubbles is now an independent charity to bring about real change in speech, language and communication needs for children in KS1. The programme is run in different areas across London and England. Half Moon is the Tower Hamlets Delivery Partner.

What you get from us

  • A day-long induction session for all staff and practitioners (Sept)
  • Two half-day evaluation sessions (Jan and Jul)
  • A drama practitioner to deliver 24 afternoon sessions (8 per term)
  • An online Speech Bubbles INSET for KS1 staff
  • All project admin
  • A summary of data on the progress made by the children

What we need from you

  • Assign a member of staff to work on Speech Bubbles for the whole year (a high-level TA, Learning Mentor or SENCo)
  • Refer 20 children to the programme who have a SLCN
  • Complete pre- and post-project online evaluation forms about the children

Since we began delivering Speech Bubbles in 2012 we have worked with 25 primary schools and over 1250 children.
