Comets – It Starts with a Seed

This term, Comets have been exploring the poem and visuals from the book It Starts with a Seed. We have had a fun term  devising ways in which to share the poem using our bodies; working on our physicality and choreography. Additionally we have been learning about shadow puppetry and practising the skills needed to bring the art form to the stage.

With the help of artist Liz Atkin, Comets have designed and made their own puppets and have thoroughly enjoyed discovering the delightful way the puppets can help tell a story.

Congratulations to Elsie and Donnacha for winning Recognition Awards. See the video here.

Eclipse – Theseus and the Minotaur

This term, Eclipse have been working on the Greek Myth ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’. Each week they have entered the room with boundless energy, engaged with the story and created some lovely work. The group have worked extremely hard on their acting, and reacting to the many twists and turns of this infamous story! Eclipse have also explored non-verbal techniques to create the drama and bring the tale to life.

Congratulations to Dora and Roman for winning Recognition Awards. See the video here.

Equinox – The Voice Taken

This term, Equinox have been exploring the ancient Greek myths of the nymph Echo. Looking at the techniques and devices of a Greek chorus, Equinox have utilised their impressive choreographic skills and ensemble work to incorporate this device, of story-telling through movement, into their work.

Over this term we have studied the portrayal of character and how this may be achieved when several people are playing the same one, and that the story we tell with our physicality is just as important as the words we use.

Congratulations to Anastasis and Keziah for winning Recognition Awards. See the video here.

Lunar – DNA. What would you do?

This term, Lunar have been using DNA by Dennis Kelly as stimulus for creating their work. The group have shared interesting stories and thoughts surrounding moral dilemmas within the play. How do we act when an accident happens and it’s our fault? Do we always act responsibly? Do we always consider the consequences of our actions?

Congratulations to Mia for winning the Jack Petchey Award. Also huge cheers for Maria, who won the Recognition Award. See the video here.

Solar – Sometimes I…

This term, we were inspired by one of our members to get the whole staff team at Half Moon, as well as Solar members, writing poetry. Inspired by the thoughts that enter our minds, shape our feelings, and take us elsewhere in our imagination, and using balloons as a metaphor for those feelings, the poems were used to inform this term’s work. So rich and varied were they we may even use them next term!

Imagine if you will a ‘stormy’ mind…. Now imagine those thoughts as members of our ensemble…. They arrive at a place that is not their usual place…. Imagine that place as a brain!

Congratulations to Joe for winning the Jack Petchey Award. Also huge cheers for Emily, who won the Recognition Award. See the video here.
