London Landscapes

East London based brother and sister design duo Tom and Jess Jones-Berney, running under the moniker of Tomartacus, presented a striking collection of illustrated prints that brought London’s sprawling urban jungle to life in an explosion of vibrant colour.

Lines, Shapes and Places

A striking collection of linocuts and stylised graphics formed the basis of this visually sumptuous exhibition by East London based artist Jane Smith, who takes inspiration from ordinary local surroundings as much as iconic buildings and familiar street locations, which formed an eye catching range of work for her Half Moon exhibition.

Pictures at Play

A vibrant exhibition showcasing winning entries from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) biennial competition. Chosen by a jury including published illustrators, art directors and Half Moon, Pictures at Play covered an array of genres and showcased some wonderful work by published and unpublished artists in the field.

Making Marks

Stages of Half Moon Exhibition

A wide-ranging display of 56 original posters and photographs covering the 44 year history of Half Moon Theatre. The exhibition accompanied the launch of Stages of Half Moon, an online digital archive of the company’s history told through photographs, programmes, news stories, documents, videos and filmed interviews with over 100 people. Half Moon’s digital archive is available at www.stagesofhalfmoon.org.uk.

Picture, Letter

London based artist Jenny Wright offered a playful and contemporary reflection upon the image as language. Using her obsession with emoji and their expressive capabilities without the need for words, Picture, Letter showed how these popular images can say one or several things simultaneously, simply through the looks of their faces.

Havelock Walks East

Havelock Walk is home to a diverse community of creative people, who live and work on a cobbled mews at the heart of Forest Hill, in South East London. However, they crossed the river to ‘Walk East’ to Half Moon. Havelock Walks East brought together a spectacular assortment of painters, sculptors, photographers, artists, printmakers and designers, presenting an impressively wide-ranging and exciting exhibition.

Recycollages – Junk Transformed, by Susan Wadsworth, was a striking and playful exhibition of mixed media assemblages that used the everyday debris of our throw-away society – such as plastic toys, bottle tops, old comics, drinking straws, clothes pegs, broken jewellery and plastic bags – to offer a fresh perspective on what constitutes contemporary art.

Figures, Creatures and Tea

Figures, Creatures and Tea was a stunning collection of rich and colourful paintings and prints inspired by juggling the artist’s busy life with her young family and their friends – alongside her great love of tea. The exhibition also featured three paintings that were created in response to Half Moon’s 2015 spring season, with works inspired by Chicken Licken, Handa’s Surprise and Pitschi, the Kitten with Dreams.

Around Half Moon

Around Half Moon was a stunning collection of photography, headlining with a series of images of our newly refurbished building. The exhibition also includes beautiful vistas from our roof, offering unique perspectives through chimney pots and tiled roofs towards some of the East End’s most iconic buildings including The Shard, Canary Wharf, St Paul’s Cathedral and St Dunstan’s Church.
Around Half Moon was part of PHOTOMONTH EAST LONDON International Photography Festival 2014. Imagining the East End was a major theme of 2014 with exhibitions and events taking place in galleries and venues throughout East London.

A Transitional Moment

A Transitional Moment was a striking collection of drawings, prints and paintings by East London artist Ross Head. The exhibition featured works produced in response to the physical transformation that Half Moon went through over the autumn of 2013 as part of our building refurbishment programme.

Every Picture Tells a Story

A vibrant mix of exciting book illustrations using different media including dip-pen and ink, water-colour and gouache.
Every Picture Tells a Story featured the work of leading children’s book illustrator, David Tazzyman (Mr Gum, Agatha Parrot, Eleanor’s Eyebrows, The Donut Diaries), complemented by pieces from three of the UK’s up and coming illustrators – Siân Pattenden “lovable, rascally characters”; Lucy Freegard “capturing a vibrant sense of movement” and Tom McLaughlin “sparkling magic and mayhem”. Rogues and villains, unexpected heroes and some rather cute animals filled the walls!

A Walk in the Park
