Fabrics and Fragments

Fabrics and Fragments
by GCSE and A-Level Art students from Bishop Challoner Catholic Federation of Schools, Mulberry Academy Shoreditch and Mulberry School for Girls
15 July – 3 September 2019

Artwork by Mulberry School for Girls student

Tower Hamlets Artist Teachers Network and three of Half Moon’s local partnership secondary schools came together to present a vibrant and diverse range of work in different media by their GCSE and A-Level Art students.

At Bishop Challoner, the focus was identity, fusing portraits and landscapes or fragmenting and reconstructing images of themselves or family members. Several students  explored the reflective qualities of still life objects presenting quite complex images where light dances over plastic and glass.

At Mulberry Academy Shoreditch the impetus for the students was thematic explorations of ethnicity, culture and gender identity within the urban environment. Others looked at light and shape reflections in primary sources linked to their local environment.

At Mulberry School for Girls, students worked with themes such as natural forms, maps, elements, textures and messages taking inspiration from photographs from the local area and a sense of place to create captivating textile pieces.

The work exhibited, created in response to the specifications of examination courses, was striking in its maturity and extensive range of styles, providing an engaging visual overview of the practice of contemporary Londoners in their early career.

Fabrics and Fragments celebrated and encouraged the creativity among Tower Hamlet’s schools’ community and was part of Half Moon’s on-going commitment to showcase the work of local art students from across our home borough and to inspire more young people to see the creative industries as a fulfilling and exciting career choice.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Tower Hamlets Artist Teachers Network.

Fabrics and Fragments runs from 15 July to 3 September 2019 at Gallery @ Half Moon.
