From Start to Finish: A Collection of Book Illustrations by Rachana Jadhav, Karin Littlewood, Fabi Santiago and Jennie Webber 6 January – 21 April 2017
From Start to Finish offered a vibrant and diverse mix of book illustrations drawn from a range of London artists, who presented a visual explanation and insight into their working processes: from the initial starting ideas, sketches and subsequent rough drafts through to the final published pages.
Rachana Jadhav unpacked the graphic novel that accompanied the theatre production her, which dramatically combined hand drawn black and white artwork with hyper real photomontage and a playful use of text. Rachana’s work gave a unique insight into the important use of storyboards and the integration of digital technologies within live performance, which formed the basis of the featured graphic novel.
In complete contrast, illustrator Karin Littlewood’s exquisite watercolours weree drawn from her picture books for the very young, including Immi, Star Girl and Sea Horse (Otter Barry Books). Karin is the author of over forty children’s books and has been nominated three times for the distinguished Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration in books for children.
Illustrator, printmaker and taxidermist Jennie Webber offered a stunning range of etchings and drawings reflecting her incurable curiosity for flora and fauna, as seen in her first book, It Starts With a Seed (Quarto). Themes of conservation underpinned each piece by Jennie; the idea being that if people are amazed by the natural world, then they will be more inclined to protect it.
Fabi Santiago completed the exhibition with her gorgeous and playful screen prints, including a selection from her picture book Tiger in A Tutu and Paws Off My Book, both published by Orchard. Fabi’s work offered the colourful vibrancy of her native Brazil.
