Half Moon is delighted to be hosting From Painting to Pottery, our tenth annual exhibition of artwork by talented young people from local secondary schools. This vibrant showcase is in partnership with the Tower Hamlets Artist Teacher Network (THAT), and this year we’re thrilled to be working with students from George Green’s School and Mulberry Stepney Green School.
The exhibition features an impressive mix of work by GCSE and A-Level Art students – from bold paintings and intricate drawings to thoughtful graphic pieces and striking 3D designs. There’s something special about seeing the world through the eyes of young artists and their creativity, skill and individuality really shine through.
At George Green’s School, students across Key Stages 3 to 5 have been experimenting with Sgraffito (in Italian, “to scratch”) – a decorative pottery technique that involves layering coloured slip over clay and then scratching parts away to reveal patterns, textures and designs beneath. In a special workshop, students created tiles featuring figurative, patterned and abstract designs, which they’ve brought together into three stunning large-scale panels.
Meanwhile, at Mulberry Stepney Green School, students from Key Stage 4 and 5 have explored themes through Fine Art, Graphic Communication and 3D Design. Inspired by a range of artists and designers, they’ve developed personal responses using materials and techniques that best fit their creative ideas. The result is a rich and varied collection of work that reflects each student’s unique perspective.
From Painting to Pottery is part of Half Moon’s ongoing commitment to supporting young artists in Tower Hamlets. We’re proud to provide a platform for local students to share their work, build confidence and imagine exciting futures in the creative industries.

Beneath some of the artworks there are chalk boards for visitors – young and older – to make their own responses, or leave their own creative imprints for others to enjoy. There is also a specially created Gallery Trail for children to complete.
School and community groups can visit free of charge by pre-booking and can use the exhibition to support Arts Award Discover and Explore. Contact Androulla on 020 7709 8908 or youth@halfmoon.org.uk for more information.
