Education and Teachers

Half Moon's CPD programme for teachers
November 2011 - July 2012

Half Moon is offering a series of Continuing Professional Development opportunities for primary and secondary school teachers.

The programme offers a series of one-off practical sessions, covering all phases of education, delivered by theatre and drama professionals and some of the Borough's most respected teachers, and planned in partnership with the Borough's Drama AST Julia Williams.

All courses are free of charge for teachers in Tower Hamlets - made possible by funding from the Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service (THAMES).

There are also a limited number of places for teachers working outside the borough - a fee of £45 Half Day/£95 Full Day courses applies.

"Just realising how simple it is to incorporate Drama into all learning was important to me, the session gave me the tools to do this” 2010 CPD attendee

About Half Moon's Participatory and Outreach Programme

Last year Half Moon delivered 700 participatory sessions involving over 18,000 young people. We work with schools, colleges, children's centres, community and youth organisations on a range of exciting participatory projects. This includes curriculum related workshops, after school activities, initiatives to engage young people in theatre and professional development for teachers.

Current projects include:

  • Poetry Quest - a collaboration with The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts. A project that provides year 5 and 6 students to work with two local poets to develop their own poetry
  • Drama in the Mix - a project that will see students devise, write and produce radio-themed plays that will be showcased at a special event in 2012
  • Transitions – Supporting young people with their transition from primary to secondary school using drama.
  • ScriptWorks - New writing and performance project for primary and secondary schools. Students work with a professional writer, director and designer to create their own piece of theatre.
  • Careers in Theatre - Hands on experience for 14 to 17 year olds of the business, technical and artistic aspects of professional theatre.
  • Let's Go Outisde – Using drama in outdoor spaces with early years groups.
  • Olympic Numeracy - Innovative project using drama and storytelling to engage children in KS2 maths.
  • Lyrical Literacy – A spoken word/poetry project for primary schools.
  • CPD for teachers – A series of practical training sessions for primary and secondary school teachers (free for schools in Tower Hamlets).

Each project is unique, complements the curriculum and often combines drama with other artforms such as puppetry, video technology, music, art and dance - led by our specialist tutors.

Projects are carefully planned, monitored and evaluated by the Half Moon team in consultation with users. Half Moon can create tailor made programmes for your group. We facilitate projects of varying lengths from one-off workshops to multi-term residencies and can work with multiple groups within each school/centre.

Half Moon are keen to provide a legacy for the schools and centres we work with and can provide training sessions for the teachers, support staff and parents/carers involved to carry on Half Moon's work after the project.

All Half Moon staff have Enhanced CRB status.
