Half Moon Theatre at Home – Live
Enjoy world-class theatre whilst we’re closed
Half Moon Theatre offered families access to some of its content online during lockdown. A selection of recent much-loved productions for young people were made available to stream online for free from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 19 July 2020.
Productions were made available online at www.halfmoon.org.uk/live, alongside access to backstage interviews, production photos and information about how the shows were created.
We hope you enjoyed watching these productions, which have been viewed over 14,200 times, and look forward to welcoming you back to Half Moon soon.

Shows for ages 2-8
An uplifting tale of friendship and courage as three friends embark on an adventure to chase their butterflies away. Based on research into children’s anxiety, Butterflies will whisk you away on a journey of what makes you anxious and what we can do to understand, accept or overcome these feelings. A Tangled Feet and Half Moon co-production.

A heartfelt story about the importance of compassion, community and understanding. Using charming storytelling, playful puppetry and an assortment of quirky characters – including Goose’s metallic friend Bolty, paper-loving official Whiskers and a feathery jazz singer called Flossy – this delightful show offers an age appropriate exploration of the issues facing people who seek safety in a new land. Half Moon presents a Lots of Odds production.

Based on the experiences of young carers, this moving and uplifting show explores what it means to look after someone else when you are young. In a playful and immersive space, the young audience help the performers look after each other, stepping into the shoes of young carers. A Tangled Feet and Half Moon co-production.

A magical world of shadow puppetry, storytelling and enchanting songs for everyone. Follow Liza into a colourful whirlwind of stories and adventure, led by a tiny Sprite with a fascination for snowflakes and where things may never be the same again. Half Moon presents a Paper Balloon production.

Follow Adeel on his journey of discovery from summer into winter as he anticipates the coming of spring. A play about loss and rebirth, exploring the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The production fuses Kathak and contemporary dance with live jazz music, against a backdrop of beautiful animation. Filmed at the Spark Children’s Festival. When Spring Comes is a wordless show.

Shows for ages 8-12
What’s a boy to do? From the playground to the classroom, from home to the uncharted waters of online, boys learn that displaying their feelings is a no-no. But what happens to emotion that can’t be let out? Boys Don’t was nominated for Best Production for Young People aged 8+ at the Off West End Awards 2017.
A Half Moon Presents and Papertale production in association with Apples and Snakes (South East). This production was filmed and edited by Brighton Metropolitan College in partnership with Brighton Dome during the Brighton Festival.

As schools reopen and we begin to come out of lockdown, traffic on the roads is increasing and everyone needs to be more alert as recent car free roads are now full of vehicles. More Important Things is a play that expores road safety issues. This gripping production draws attention to the important issue of road safety, in a bid to reduce accidents on the capital’s roads. A must see!
More Important Things was commissioned by Tower Hamlets Road Safety team, and produced and created by Half Moon.

Shows for teenagers and adults
The final show in the Half Moon Live series of family shows online is Guantanamo Boy, based on the book by AnnaPerera. Innocent until proven guilty? Not here you’re not. Khalid likes football, hip hop, computer games and has a big crush on a girl – like any other teenage boy. Except being a young Muslim in the aftermath of 9/11 can be very dangerous. Snatched in the middle of the night he is thrown into a nightmare world in which he is presumed guilty. Alone, afraid and far from home, will he have the strength to survive? Guantanamo Boy asked difficult questions about how we balance human rights and national security – and what happens if we get the balance wrong. Half Moon presents a Brolly production.

An innovative multi-media show for teenagers and adults that uses green screen technology to integrate animation, film and live action to create a dark and twisted world of politics, war and survival. Combining the emotional depth of theatre with the visual intensity of the graphic novel, her is a compelling story of a fifteen year old London girl who inexplicably finds that conflict has made her an alien in her own country.
Drawing on the experiences of ordinary people confronted with displacement as a result of war, this at times shocking play features one actor playing different versions of the ‘girl’. She navigates the harsh realities faced by young women in conflict zones and the difficult choices they had to make to survive. A Brolly Productions and Half Moon co-production.

Developed in partnership with young people, Off the Grid is an immersive play by David Lane that navigates a shocking and heart breaking human story through the underbelly of a hidden society. Follow Connor and Kelly over ten years and discover if their own tale is as hopeful as the fiction they’ve clung on to for their very existence.

What Once Was Ours (ages 12+ and adults)
What Once Was Ours received an OnComm (Online Commendation) award in June 2020 and won Best Production for Young People Aged 13+ at the 2018 Offies, the Off West End Theatre Awards. A Zest Theatre and Half Moon co-production.

Children’s Art Week
Alongside our online shows, we also celebrated Children’s Art Week from 29 June to 19 July with three online exhibitions from our archive that connect with three different themes (the Natural World; Connecting across Generations; Literacy and Creative Writing).
National Poetry Month
Alongside our online shows, we also celebrated National Poetry Month in April with a series of poems by some of our spoken word artists.
